Position Vacancy: Tenure-track position in sociology.
Starting Date: August 16, 2014

Title and Description:
The Department of Sociology & Anthropology at the University of Idaho is searching for a tenure-track assistant professor in the sociology of science, broadly construed. The candidate’s research agenda should focus broadly upon the relation between science and society and contribute to a thematic research strength in the college on Science, Culture, and Society.  It is anticipated that teaching should enhance and expand upon the department’s curriculum.

Major Responsibilities:
The successful candidates must establish a successful research program and contribute to the interdisciplinary life of the university community. The teaching load is 5 courses per annum. The successful candidate will teach key undergraduate courses in sociology and demonstrate a commitment to collaboration and collegiality.  Student advising and university service are required.
It is expected that the candidate will participate in interdisciplinary work and collaboration across the college units in furthering research and curriculum under the theme of science, culture, and society.

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in sociology
  • The ability to contribute to departmental emphases in culture, education, environment, health, policy, or science
  • The interest and ability to work on interdisciplinary collaborations under the broad scope of science, culture and society
  • An established record of success in research excellence
  • The potential for teaching and advising excellence
  • A commitment to collaboration
  • Evidence of a commitment to departmental and university service
  • An ability to contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community
  • Ability to establish and maintain rapport with students

Must:  Applicants who are selected as final possible candidates must be able to pass a criminal background check.*

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working on interdisciplinary research teams.
  • Expertise or interest in researching rural communities
  • Ability to seek external funding.
  • Willingness and ability to teaching research methods, Introduction to Sociology, and/or freshman level special topic seminars for the University’s General Education Curriculum.
  • Willingness to contribute to an interdisciplinary team through providing research skills on social and policy aspects of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education.
